Κοινές δράσεις για την αύξηση της προσβασιµότητας των πολιτών σε βάσεις περιβαλλοντικών δεδοµένων και εργαλεία παρακολούθησης µε στόχο τον περιορισµό των θαλάσσιων απορριµµάτων στη Λεκάνη της Μαύρης Θάλασσας

Ομάδα εργασίας από 5 χώρες σε μια κοινή προσπάθεια για την κατασκευή ενός πολυδιάστατου εργαλείου φιλοξενίας γεωχωρικών δεδομένων, βέλτιστων οδηγών παρακολούθησης και καλών πρακτικών ως μέσο για την καταγραφή και μείωση των θαλάσσιων απορριµµάτων.

Η δεύτερη περιφερειακή συνάντηση εργασίας του έργου MARLITER πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Κωστάντζα της Ρουμανίας στις 3-4 Ιουλίου 2019, παρουσία άνω των 30 εκπροσώπων από τους εταίρους του προγράμματος και εμπλεκόμενους φορείς (δημόσιες υπηρεσίες, εθνικοί και τοπικοί φορείς, επιχειρήσεις, εµπειρογνώµονες). Η συνάντηση κινήθηκε γύρω από τις ανάγκες και προτεραιότητες που πρέπει να τεθούν σε σχέση με τρεις διακριτές ομάδες δράσεων και συγκεκριμένα α) στην ανασκόπηση, σύνθεση και αξιολόγηση της διαθέσιµης πληροφορίας, β) στην ανάπτυξη ενός διαδικτυακού, διαδραστικού εργαλείου ενημέρωσης και ευαισθητοποίησης και γ) στην ενδυνάμωση συνόλου φορέων που εµπλέκονται στην παρακολούθηση, τον περιορισµό, την ανάδειξη και εφαρµογή πολιτικών σχετικά µε τα θαλάσσια απορρίµµατα. Η βελτίωση της επικοινωνίας μεταξύ των εμπλεκομένων φορέων, η διάχυση και πρόσβαση στην πληροφορία, η αυστηρότερη εφαρμογή του υφισταμένου νομικού πλαισίου και ο σχεδιασμός κοινών δράσεων για τη διαχείριση των απειλών από τα θαλάσσια απορρίμματα, αναδείχθηκαν ως τα αναγκαία, πρώτα βήματα. Κάθε προσπάθεια προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση πρέπει όχι μόνο να γίνει σεβαστή από όλους τους πολίτες αλλά και να υιοθετηθεί από όλες τις κυβερνήσεις. Υπό αυτό το πρίσμα, η ομάδα έργου οριστικοποίησε τη δομή του διαδικτυακού εργαλείου ενηµέρωσης και ευαισθητοποίησης, το οποίο αποτελεί και βασικό παραδοτέο του MARLITER. Αυτή η δέσμη εργαλείων θα προσφέρει μεταξύ άλλων πρόσβαση σε ποιοτικά και ποσοτικά ευρήματα για τα θαλάσσια απορρίμματα και την κατάσταση του περιβάλλοντος καθώς η πληροφορία αυτή θα συλλεχθεί σε εθνικό επίπεδο και θα αφορά στις 5 χώρες που συµµετέχουν στο έργο. Επιπλέον, ιδιαίτερη έμφαση θα δοθεί στην ανάδειξη καλών πρακτικών, σε κενά στη γνώση, στην πληροφορία και στα δεδομένα, σε ιδιαιτερότητες σε εθνικό επίπεδο, αλλά και στο διάλογο με φορείς χάραξης πολιτικής.

Η Εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του έργου “MARLIΤER: Κοινές δράσεις για την αύξηση της προσβασιμότητας των πολιτών σε βάσεις περιβαλλοντικών δεδομένων και εργαλεία παρακολούθησης με στόχο τον περιορισμό των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων στην Λεκάνη της Μαύρης Θάλασσας”, το οποίο υλοποιείται με την υποστήριξη του Κοινού Επιχειρησιακού Προγράμματος “Λεκάνη της Μαύρης Θάλασσας 2014-2020”, που συγχρηματοδοτείται από τον Ευρωπαϊκό Μηχανισμό Γειτονίας και Εταιρικής Σχέσης (European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument- ENPI). Εταίροι του έργου αποτελούν ο Τοµέας Οικολογίας του Τµήµατος Βιολογίας του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστηµίου Θεσσαλονίκης, ο Μη Κυβερνητικός Οργανισµός Black Sea NGO Network από τη Βουλγαρία, ο Μη Κυβερνητικός Οργανισµός Mare Nostrum of Constanta από την Ρουµανία, το Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of the Sea of Odessa από την Ουκρανία και ο Μη Κυβερνητικός Οργανισµός Black Sea Eco Academy of Batumi, από την Γεωργία. Σκοπός του έργου είναι η προώθηση και η βελτίωση της συνεργασίας για αποτελεσµατικότερη περιβαλλοντική παρακολούθηση και µείωση των θαλάσσιων απορριµµάτων στη λεκάνη της Μαύρης Θάλασσας.

Marseille, April 8-11, France

The second meeting of the Erasmus+ MARINE ECOMED (https://www.marine-ecomed.net/) was held in Institut Pytheas, MIO, Aix-Marseille Université. We are getting ready for the intensive study programme on planning and management of marine and coastal areas that would offer the opportunity for MSc students of the project partner universities to get a dear underrating on need and challenges in conservation science.

Thessaloniki, February 1-2, Greece

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) organized a 2-day national level workshop, entitled “Marine Litter: The need for knowledge, synergies and actions”, within the project MARLITER “Improved online public access to environmental monitoring data and data tools for the Black Sea Basin supporting cooperation in the reduction of marine litter” with funding from the Joint Operational Program “Black Sea Basin 2014-2020”, (European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument – ENPI). The workshop took place on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 February, at the hall “Manolis Anagnostakis”, at the New Town Hall of Thessaloniki. At the workshop, stakeholders in environmental protection, monitoring and reduction of marine litter participated, originated from national public authorities (i.e. Alternate Minister for the Environment and Energy), local public authorities (i.e. Deputy Mayor on Urban Resilience and Development Planning), scientific institutions, universities, businesses, NGOs, sectoral agencies, education/training centres. Through the presentations and the discussions, the necessity of taking joint actions, developing standardized, common monitoring protocols for marine litter, collating and producing standardized data, enhancing the public access on available data for environmental monitoring and ensuring social engagement were highlighted. The participated stakeholders committed to further contribute at the next steps of the implementation of the project.

The first meeting was hosted by the Department of Design and Planning in Complex Environment, Università IUAV di Venezia (14 – 15 January 2019). We are all very confident that will deliver an interesting, multidisciplinary course focused in key issues of spatial planning, environmental management and sustainability.

Thessaloniki, November 27, Greece

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) organized a Public Event with news conference and stakeholder participation, within the project MARLITER “Improved online public access to environmental monitoring data and data tools for the Black Sea Basin supporting cooperation in the reduction of marine litter” with funding from the Joint Operational Program “Black Sea Basin 2014-2020”, part of the European Neighborhood Instrument. The Public Event took place on Tuesday 27 November, at the hall “Konstantinos Kastritsis”, on the 10th floor of the School of Biology, AUTH. Stakeholders, students, volunteers, representatives of Research Institutes, NGOs, representatives of enterprises, businesses and local and regional public authorities attended the event. AUTH research team presented the project objectives, activities and expected outputs. Through the presentations, the serious issue of marine litter and the necessity of taking joint actions and contributing to the improvement of the public online access to available data and tools for environmental monitoring and to the support of adaptive management policies, education and capacity building to reduce marine litter, were highlighted. In addition, the idea and the concept of the ICT based tool, which is going to be developed during the project, were also presented. The event was considered successful while the project attracted interest from various stakeholders and the media.

Our research group participated in the 9th National Conference of the Hellenic Ecological Society, that took place in Heraklion, Crete, from 4 to 7 October. Our research findings about the assessment of the potential vulnerability of sea turtles during migration, under climate change and the impact of climate change on Caretta caretta foraging sites in the Mediterranean were presented.
