Threats to marine biodiversity in European protected areas: In this comprehensive analysis, we demonstrate that recreational activities and fishing are the main threats affecting European MPAs, while we detect a great heterogeneity in the distribution of threats across European countries. We sought for the need of standardized monitoring and assessments towards improving conservation capacity and outcomes.
